2024 T6 Aluminium Sheet

2024 T6 is a high strength aluminium alloy that mainly contains aluminium and copper. The T6 temper indicates that it has been heat treated and aged to increase its strength and durability. It is widely used in aerospace, defense and structural applications where a strong, lightweight material is essential. The T6 temper gives it excellent mechanical properties but reduced corrosion resistance compared to other aluminium grades.

2024 aluminium is known for its high strength to weight ratio, good fatigue resistance and excellent machinability. The T6 version of 2024 aluminium offers strong mechanical properties, with 470 MPa tensile strength and 325 MPa yield strength. However, it has relatively poor corrosion resistance, making surface treatment or Alclad coating necessary in harsh environments. These properties make it ideal for aerospace structures, automotive frames and precision components.

The typical chemical composition of 2024 T6 aluminium includes approximately 90.7% aluminium, 3.8%–4.9% copper, 1.2%–1.8% magnesium and 0.3%–0.9% manganese. Other elements such as silicon, iron and zinc may be present in trace amounts. This specific combination gives the alloy its high strength and fatigue resistance, while the T6 tempering process enhances hardness and mechanical stability for structural and aerospace applications.
